Semeru Volcano Erupts in Indonesia
The Semeru volcano, located in East Java province of Indonesia, has become active on Saturday and started spewing hot clouds of smoke and ash. This was reported on Twitter by the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure of Indonesia.
The increase in volcanic activity was recorded around 15:20 local time. The head of the disaster countermeasure agency in East Java urged residents living near the volcano's base to evacuate.
Currently, it is known that 13 people have died as a result of the Semeru volcano eruption. More than 40 people have been hospitalized with burns. According to local residents, the emergency alert system on the island did not function, causing many to be unable to leave their homes in time.
