Chinese and Iranian Foreign Ministers Discuss Tehran's Nuclear Issue
The Foreign Ministers of China and Iran, Wang Yi and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, discussed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding Tehran's nuclear program, as well as international efforts to restore stability in Afghanistan during a phone call, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry reported by TASS.
“We are pleased that the Iranian side has decided to participate in the JCPOA negotiations, which will take place at the end of this month,” said Wang Yi. “This indicates Tehran's positive attitude. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear agreement and must take the first steps to rectify the situation.”
As noted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, once the United States returns to the agreement, Iran could begin fulfilling its obligations under it. “Each of the interested parties should enhance coordination to bring the negotiations back onto a normal track,” he added. “China supports strengthening cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as this will create a favorable environment for restoring consultations.”
Wang Yi also congratulated Iran on the successful holding of the second meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan's neighboring countries, which took place “at a timely moment.” He reminded that Beijing will host the third round of meetings on the Afghan issue and is ready to strengthen cooperation with Tehran in this direction for the sake of consolidating consensus.
“China and Iran support each other in comprehensive strategic partnership relations,” the Chinese minister emphasized. “Regardless of any changes that may occur in the international arena, Beijing will steadfastly promote the development of friendly ties with Tehran.”
