This Is Not Demarcation: Former Commander of Armenian Border Guard Explains Government's Mistake

Major General Armen Abrahamyan is convinced that the issue of border delimitation should not be left to the military, as it is fraught with unpredictable consequences. What is happening on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border cannot be called delimitation or demarcation, he stated during a meeting with journalists today.

He noted that since February 9, 2021, Armenia has entirely new borders from Araks to Sotk. He personally does not know how much area remains to Armenia from the 29,800 square kilometers.

"To undertake delimitation, interstate commissions should be established under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is primarily a diplomatic task, but staff from the geodesy institute should also participate. As far as I know, that excellent structure has already been abolished. But under no circumstances should the adjustment of borders be left to the military. This is fraught with unpredictable consequences," said Abrahamyan.

It should be recalled that Armenia's Foreign Minister Ara Aivazyan had previously stated that delimitation is a long process that will occur when diplomatic relations are established between Armenia and the relevant country, and a joint delimitation commission is created, which will develop a methodology, based on which the process will begin.
