€5 million was allocated to eliminate the pesticide graveyard, but for 2 years I've heard they are conducting experiments there,” says a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party
Recently, I visited the pesticide graveyard in the 4th district of the Erebuni administrative area, and I had the same feeling as two years ago. My friend and I were both itching all over, and our consciousness was very poor. This was stated today, on April 20, during a Yerevan city council session by Armen Nersisyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK).
“For two years, I have been talking about the pesticide graveyard. Research how dangerous that DDT pesticide is; it is carcinogenic, fatal. That pesticide causes many diseases and people die from it. €5 million was allocated to relocate or eliminate that pesticide graveyard, but for two years I’ve heard that about €400,000 has been slowly spent, and overall, they are conducting experiments there. In another 5 years, nothing will remain of that €5 million, while the pesticide will continue to poison the city of Yerevan, our rivers, and, in general, our Armenia,” he said.
He called for an investigation into this area, expressing his concerns on the matter.
In response, Mayor Hayk Marutyan said, “Unfortunately, these issues have been neglected for many years. The EU program pertains to household hazardous waste, while what you are referring to is non-household waste. Another agency should deal with the waste you mentioned; it is not our sector, it is not our responsibility.”
