Prosecutor Instructs NSS to Take Measures to Prevent and Disclose Crimes Involving Illegal Use of Weapons
The recent provision of various types of weapons and military supplies to a large number of individuals participating in military operations aimed at defending the Republic of Artsakh has created serious risks for their illegal circulation following the end of hostilities. This is evidenced by numerous instances of illegal transportation of weapons and military supplies from Artsakh to Armenia, resulting in several dozen criminal cases.
Events taking place in the Republic of Armenia after the end of military operations, alongside the related crimes and statements made in public speeches— including those expressing positions on the inevitability or permissibility of certain actions, such as during the gathering on December 5, 2020, in Yerevan's Freedom Square— pose risks of criminal manifestations involving the illegal use of weapons. Consequently, this jeopardizes the lives and health of citizens, particularly those participating in mass gatherings, and threatens public order.
In light of the above, Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan has today sent letters to the Director of the National Security Service (NSS) and the Chief of Police of the Republic of Armenia, urgently instructing them to undertake necessary operational and investigative measures to address cases of illegal arms circulation and to prevent, thwart, and disclose potential crimes linked to violence. Efforts in this direction are to be intensified.
At the same time, we again urge the citizens of the Republic of Armenia to refrain from involvement in the aforementioned criminal activities and actions associated with violence or calls for violence. Otherwise, all individuals committing illegal acts will be subject to severe criminal liability under the law.
