Papikyan Expresses Concern over Azerbaijan's Threat to Armenian Nuclear Power Plant
During the 64th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, Minister Suren Papikyan met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. Congratulating him on taking office as the IAEA Director General and wishing him fruitful work, Minister Papikyan emphasized the importance of further developing cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the IAEA, as well as ensuring the continuity of IAEA programs implemented in Armenia.
Addressing the directions and prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Armenia, Minister Papikyan highlighted that ensuring Armenia's energy security is a strategic priority enshrined in the national security strategy. "The extension of the operational period of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is under the strict attention of the Armenian government and is being carried out in strict compliance with the requirements and regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency," said Minister Papikyan. He noted that the IAEA holds particular significance for Armenia as a country operating a nuclear power plant.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the efforts directed towards the peaceful use of nuclear energy within the framework of cooperation with the IAEA and hoped that collaboration on enhancing safety measures would further expand. At the same time, Minister Papikyan expressed concern over the threats posed by Azerbaijan to the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, stating that Armenia considers it a credible threat.
During the meeting, the interlocutors also discussed the IAEA's "ZODIAC" program, which aims to establish, upgrade, and apply nuclear technologies in veterinary laboratories worldwide to monitor and prevent the spread of zoonotic viruses among humans. The IAEA's support in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic was also highly valued, particularly through the provision of RT-PCR equipment and additional tools. At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Papikyan invited IAEA Director General Grossi to Armenia.
