Portuguese Publication on Azerbaijan's Aggression at Armenian-Azerbaijani Border

The Portuguese Diário de Notícias, which has been published since 1864, presented an article titled "Clashes Between Armenia and Azerbaijan" to its readers. According to Armenpress, the article includes several official statements and assessments of the warlike rhetoric from Azerbaijan and Turkey.

The article highlights the violation of the ceasefire by Azerbaijani armed forces, threats against the Metsamor nuclear power plant, provocations leading to conflicts, the bombardment of residential houses in border villages, Aliyev's attempts to divert public attention from domestic issues through clashes, the change of the Foreign Minister due to disagreements in the Azerbaijani elite, and Baku's refusal to engage the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities as a negotiating party, along with Azerbaijan's non-signature of the UN Secretary-General's call for a ceasefire.

In the section on Nagorno-Karabakh, the article refers to Stalin's decision and the declaration of independence by Nagorno-Karabakh, stating that it was the Armenian side's victory that led to the cessation of hostilities in 1994.

"Prior to last week's escalated violence, the year 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, was more peaceful than previous years. According to the International Crisis Group, June was even the most peaceful month worldwide, with no incidents reported. On July 12, Azerbaijani military equipment approached the border in the Tavush region of Armenia, which was considered a provocative action. It also notes that more than 50 houses in Armenian villages were damaged due to Azerbaijani shelling.
