How Politically Feasible Is It to Write Azerbaijan on the Passports of Citizens Born in Artsakh: Zohrabyan
How politically feasible is it to write Azerbaijan on the passports of citizens born in Artsakh? This was written by BBK MP Naira Zohrabyan on her Facebook page.
She specifically stated: "Is there any explanation for this? This passport was provided to me by the husband of this lady and I was requested to publish it. Marina was born in the village of Chartar in the Martuni region of Artsakh. After the expiration of her passport, she was sent from Artsakh to Yerevan, and a year ago, on December 3, 2019, she received a new passport at the Davtashen passport division, which is valid until 2029 and where Azerbaijan is indicated as her place of birth, while her place of registration is mentioned as the Martuni region, village of Chartar. Now, here’s a question: even if at one point Artsakh was de jure part of Azerbaijan, how politically feasible is it to still indicate Azerbaijan as the birthplace of citizens born in Artsakh on their new passports? It is also clear that, if the letter of the law is to be followed, Azerbaijan must be written. However, I believe that a different solution should be found here. By the way, in the 90s, in similar cases, the place of birth was written as Armenia, considering that Artsakh is still not a subject of international law.
This is a question I raise for discussion to find an adequate solution, and I ask the new head of the passport division to change Marina's passport and remove the name Azerbaijan.
