Effectiveness Data of Hydroxychloroquine in COVID Treatment Still Not Summarized, Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia has issued a statement regarding the use of Hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of coronavirus.
"Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is included in the COVID-19 treatment guidelines of many countries, including Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and the Russian Federation, and more than 26 clinical trials are ongoing globally. The 70 years of experience with Hydroxychloroquine, including in the field of rheumatology, indicates that the drug has a good safety profile.
According to the treatment guidelines in Armenia, Hydroxychloroquine is prescribed to at-risk vulnerable groups and patients with pneumonia, including severe cases. It is not prescribed for asymptomatic or mild cases (without respiratory distress) and for patients under constant observation at home. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is administered only in a hospital setting, provided there are no contraindications.
Before starting treatment and daily thereafter, an electrocardiogram is performed. Special monitoring is conducted for patients with diabetes mellitus, with daily glucose measurements. Biochemical analysis (including potassium in cases of hypokalemia) is monitored according to comorbid conditions. Medication interactions are verified as per the current guidelines. The drug is also prescribed with caution in cases of renal insufficiency; the decision is made following a consultation.
Throughout the treatment of the coronavirus disease, one case of arrhythmia has been recorded, after which the medication was immediately discontinued. The effectiveness data of the drug regarding COVID-19 treatment has not yet been summarized, but according to preliminary data, significant positive progress is observed in a considerable number of cases."
