Residents of Syunik Receive Notices of Administrative Liability
The Public Organization "Legal Path" has reported that numerous residents of Syunik province are receiving notices from the police regarding potential administrative sanctions due to their participation in a protest held on May 24 in the city of Kapan.
In this regard, the statement released by the "Legal Path" NGO reads: "In fact, dozens of citizens are being summoned to the police for expressing peaceful protest against documented cases of torture on the grounds that the legal regime of a state of emergency in the Republic of Armenia has prohibited the freedom of peaceful assembly for the past 70 days. We (1) reaffirm our consistent position that the total ban on peaceful assemblies has become an unlawful measure, and its application against citizens who have serious reasons to protest cannot be justified. (2) We reiterate our petition sent to opposition MPs on May 15, demanding that the total ban on peaceful assemblies be legally challenged in accordance with the Constitution. (3) We are prepared to represent all citizens who participated in the May 24 protest in Kapan free of charge in the Armenian judicial system and the European Court of Human Rights, to substantiate the gross violations of these individuals' rights and to restore the constitutional freedom of assembly for citizens of the Republic of Armenia."
