China Bans Eating Dog and Cat Meat
China has officially stopped considering dogs as edible animals, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture. This decision was influenced by the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, reports Reuters.
The ministry has released an updated list of pets deemed suitable for consumption. This list includes livestock, pigs, birds, and camels.
The ban will take effect on May 1. It is noted that previously there was no nationwide prohibition against eating dog and cat meat. For instance, in Hong Kong, the slaughter of dogs and cats for food is punishable by up to six months in prison, along with a potential fine of $640.
