Spain Extends State of Emergency by Another 15 Days as Coronavirus Death Toll Reaches 809
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that the state of isolation and high alert in the country will be extended for another 15 days, during which people's movement will be strictly limited. According to CNN, the state of emergency will last until April 26. During this time, schools and most businesses will remain closed.
“We are facing a great crisis, fighting for our lives,” Sánchez said in a message to the public. The previous extension set the state of emergency until April 11.
The Spanish government will ask the country’s parliament on Tuesday to extend the emergency measures. This announcement follows a report of an increase in the number of deaths due to the coronavirus in the country. In the last 24 hours, 809 people have died from the disease, raising the death toll to 11,744.
It is noted that the death rate has decreased for the second consecutive day; Friday recorded 932 deaths, and Thursday saw a record 950 deaths.
Spain is the second most affected country in the world by the coronavirus, following Italy. The number of infected individuals has reached 124,736, with 34,219 of them having recovered.
