Project and Author of the Memorial for the Victims of March 1 Announced
The project by sculptor Albert Vardanyan has won the competition to create a memorial dedicated to the victims of March 1. This information was shared via the Facebook page of the Yerevan City Hall.
Participants in the competition were tasked with ensuring that the conceptual design of the memorial was limited to combinations of recognizable forms, excluding portrait-like similarities. Additionally, it was required to be in the form of a relief sculpture. The memorial will be installed on Grigor Lusavorich Street, between the 22nd and 23rd retaining walls of the fence stretching from Beirut Street to Zakyan Street.
The relief sculpture will consist of a combination of bronze and stone, where the iconographic language and concept are expressed through sculptural symbols and structural solutions. The viewer will find themselves in an environment created by art, which carries the memory of the respective area and leads them back to the tragic days of March 2008.
The Deputy Mayor of Yerevan and head of the commission, Tigran Virabyan, expressed gratitude to all authors of the projects. “In the previous competition, the commission did not approve any of the submitted works, and it was decided to announce a second competition to give artists the opportunity to present new works. A significant and interesting memorial will soon be installed in Yerevan, which will speak for itself and tell the story of the events of March 1,” the deputy mayor said.
