The Price of Meat May Increase by 500-700 Dram

The newspaper 'Zhamanak' reports that the government has presented a draft law to amend the Tax Code.

If the amendment is adopted, a 7% VAT rate will be applied to local meat. This is presented as a tax reduction, as a 20% rate currently applies to meat sold in supermarkets. However, the reality is that meat has not been taxed with VAT throughout Armenia, and after this change, the retail price of meat may increase by 500-700 dram. This includes both the VAT and the slaughterhouse costs. Thus, meat will become an unattainable luxury for a larger portion of the population.
