Serious Negotiations Within the Government: Pashinyan Not Fully Informed

The newspaper "Pasto" reports that on Monday, the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Legal Affairs provided a negative conclusion regarding the bill to politicize the positions of the head of the National Security Service and the police chief. Already yesterday, at the start of the parliamentary session, the ruling party deputies reaffirmed their negative position on the bill, which had received a negative conclusion.

It is noteworthy that this comes after the bill was accepted on the first reading by the parliament. According to the newspaper's information, serious negotiations have been ongoing within the government on this issue. In particular, it is reported that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has not been fully and comprehensively informed about the potential risks associated with politicizing these positions.

During the discussions of this bill in the parliament, the head of the Legal Affairs Committee, Vladimir Vardanyan, pointed out that "the situation in the police and NSS systems would be disrupted if the criteria for appointing the specified positions were changed, while there were no changes in the appointment of their deputies."

According to information, in the initial phase, Pashinyan had candidates in mind for these positions, but after a profound analysis of the sector's responsibilities and priorities and consultations with relevant expert circles, he changed his intention.

In a conversation with the newspaper, one of the key figures in the political field mentioned that a crucial factor in the issue was the fact that the bill stipulated accountability of these sectors to the National Assembly.
