Wildlife Observation Hides and Cottages Opened in Armenia

Recently, a ceremony took place to open wildlife observation hides and cottages in the areas of Shatin and Chiva in Vayots Dzor region, as reported by Econews.am. Representatives from environmental and tourism organizations attended the event. The participants were introduced to the hides and the initiative "Wildlife Watching Armenia," which aims to develop wildlife observation culture in Armenia, promoting environmental conservation and improving the socio-economic conditions of local residents.

The use of hides and cottages is an innovative approach and marks the first time such facilities are utilized in Armenia for observing wildlife, particularly large mammals. This not only boosts ecotourism but also contributes to mitigating human-wildlife conflict. Specifically, there are recorded periodic visits by bears to locals' orchards that result in damage, which currently goes un-compensated, fostering negative attitudes towards wildlife.

The placement of such hides and cottages in the orchard areas offers owners the opportunity to earn additional income from visitors and highlights the importance of wildlife conservation. The hides are located in the vicinity of Chiva and Shatin, set up in the orchards of local residents, where various wild animals can be observed, including brown bears, bezoar goats, wild boars, foxes, grey hare, and more. The area is also rich in other wildlife species, including birds and reptiles.

The hides are designed for 2-3 people and feature internet access and limited electricity provided by solar systems. They are furnished with two beds, chairs, and necessary equipment to ensure a comfortable experience for visitors observing wildlife.

The construction of these hides is part of the project "Wildlife Observation and Related Ecotourism Services Development in Vayots Dzor Region," implemented by the Union of Biologists of Armenia. The sub-grant is executed under the Armenian General Benevolent Union and Eurasia Partnership Foundation's NGO Bridge Program, funded by the European Union.
