Buildings' Walls Are No Longer Plaques, But Tombstones - Kamo Areyan

The Council of Yerevan has adopted a decision to install a plaque commemorating the memory of the Honored Geologist of Armenia, Doctor, and Professor Solomon Balayan at 69 Republic Avenue.

Secretary of the Council's "Light" faction Ani Khachatryan noted that the proposal had been made back during the time of the "Yelk" faction.

Council advisor Kamo Areyan emphasized the importance of raising this issue and pointed out that what we have today is tied to the government's order. "Our problem is different; we do not have a citywide rule on how plaques should be installed. The walls of the capital's buildings no longer have plaques, but rather tombstones, which is not new," he said.

He also mentioned that there are buildings where there is no space left for any new plaques.

Kamo Areyan expressed the opinion that the time has come for a unified schematic design for plaques to be implemented throughout the city, and simultaneously thanked the chief architect of Yerevan, Arthur Meschian, for leading the issue toward regulation. Mayor Hayk Marutyan added that he believes standards will be adopted by September.
