Trump on Washington Murders, Calls for Restoration of Death Penalty

U.S. President Donald Trump announced during a cabinet meeting that his administration wants to restore the death penalty in the nation's capital, NBC News reports.

“If someone commits murder in the capital city of Washington, we will do everything possible to ensure the perpetrator is sentenced to death, and that is a very strong deterrent, and everyone who has heard about it agrees with that,” Trump stated.

Additionally, in January, Trump signed an executive order expressing his desire to expand the death penalty nationwide.

According to the nonprofit information center “Death Penalty,” the Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in Washington, D.C. in 1972, and the city council officially repealed it in 1981. Later, in 1992, Washington residents voted against the reinstatement of the death penalty in the city.
