Why Did Yerevan Make This Decision? Reasons for Not Hosting the EAEU Meeting in Armenia
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ani Badalyan, answered a question from "News" regarding the statement by Yuri Ushakov about the refusal to host the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Supreme Council meeting in Armenia. She explained why Yerevan made this decision and the reasons behind the choice not to hold the meeting in Armenia.
Badalyan clarified: "According to the regulations in the EAEU framework, it is not mandatory for the EAEU Supreme Council meeting to be held in the member state that is presiding over the EAEU statutory body. Consequently, the decision regarding the timing and location of the next regular session of the EAEU Supreme Council is made during the preceding session. In this particular case, during the EAEU Supreme Council meeting held in Moscow on May 8, 2024, the leaders of the member states decided to hold the upcoming session in St. Petersburg in December of this year."
It is worth noting that earlier, Yuri Ushakov, assistant to the President of Russia, announced that the EAEU summit would take place at Armenia's request in St. Petersburg on December 25, but it would be presided over by Nichol Pashinyan, as Armenia is presiding in the EAEU in 2024.
