Trump at the Center of a New Scandal
U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris addressed an incident involving Donald Trump’s Republican campaign team and officials from Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday, stating that Trump has shown "disrespect towards sacred ground for the sake of a political stunt," according to USA Today.
The incident, which occurred during a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, has garnered significant attention in recent days. Trump has repeatedly addressed it during his campaign events on Thursday and Friday, justifying his actions.
"They tell me that I used their graves for publicity, but I did not do that," Trump stated at a rally in Pennsylvania. The former U.S. president had visited Arlington to participate in a ceremony honoring 13 soldiers who lost their lives during the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.
An employee from the cemetery attempted to prohibit the political campaign from occurring on-site, and members of Trump’s campaign staff reportedly "forcibly pushed him back," according to a military statement. The cemetery employee contacted the police but ultimately decided not to press charges.
The U.S. Army stated that those participating in Monday’s wreath-laying ceremony and visiting the 60th section, where the last American casualties are laid to rest, were informed about federal law, Army regulations, and the Department of Defense policies that "clearly prohibit political activity on cemetery grounds." Trump’s campaign team took photos and recorded videos at the location.
“This is a solemn place. A place where we come together to honor the American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this nation,” Harris said of the cemetery. “This is not a place for politics.”
Trump, for his part, denied that the purpose of visiting the cemetery was to draw attention to his re-election campaign, stating that he was invited by the families of the fallen servicemen and felt "obligated to carry out this event despite the challenges of scheduling."
