Largest Diamond Extracted in Russia in the Last 10 Years
In Russia's Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the ALROSA company has extracted the largest diamond of gem quality in the last decade from the Mayat diamond mine. The record-breaking stone weighs 390.7 carats. The found diamond is a light crystal of non-standard shape with a yellow-brown hue.
The precious stone was discovered during the washing of diamond-bearing sands. Alongside it, a larger classical-shaped colorless diamond weighing 37.7 carats was also found. Both stones have been sent for expert evaluation of their morphological characteristics.
Pavel Marinichev, the CEO of ALROSA, noted that the finds still need to be studied, but it is undoubtedly a record for both the company and the country's diamond industry. It is worth mentioning that the previous largest gem-quality diamond, weighing 401 carats, was found ten years ago, in 2013.
