France Does Not Recognize Rebel Authority in Niger, Says Macron
France does not recognize the authority of rebels in Niger and will only withdraw its troops from the country at the request of the ousted President Bazouma, stated French President Emmanuel Macron.
Earlier, it was reported that the United States will deploy forces and equipment to Niger, while a portion of the main personnel will be withdrawn from the country, according to a U.S. official cited by Reuters.
It should be recalled that on July 27, a group of high-ranking military officers appeared on state television in Niger, announcing the ousting of President Mohamed Bazouma, the closing of borders, and the imposition of a curfew throughout the country.
The relationship between the military and Bazouma had soured when the president attempted to dismiss the commander of Niger’s Presidential Guard.
