Georgian President Responds to Sanctions Imposed on Georgian Airways

“This is a step against the Georgian people,” commented the Georgian authorities on Ukraine's decision to impose sanctions on Georgian Airways and its leadership.

“This is not the only harsh and unjust decision against the Georgian people considering the solidarity we show towards Ukraine,” said Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

“The imposition of sanctions against Georgian Airways is a political and unjust decision,” said Tamaz Gaiashvili, head of the company. “I believe that my inclusion or that of Georgian Airways in the list of sanctioned airlines is absurd and unfair. Flights to the Russian Federation are being operated by airlines from Turkey, Arab countries, Israel, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all over Asia and Central Asia, but sanctions are not being applied to them,” Gaiashvili stated.

At the same time, he expressed hope that the Georgian government would provide an immediate and similar response to Ukraine in response to the imposition of sanctions.

It is noteworthy that Ukraine has imposed sanctions against the Georgian airline Georgian Airways and its director Tamaz Gaiashvili. The relevant decree from the President of Ukraine is already in effect.
