We must free ourselves from the gas dependence trap, I stand with Armenia: MEP
European Parliament member Fabio Massimo Castaldo has criticized the European Union for its indifferent attitude towards recent events in the Caucasus, particularly in Armenia. According to a report from the Italian-Arabic center 'Assadaka', he expressed his discontent stating, 'I am deeply disappointed that the European Council has not provided any updated information regarding the South Caucasus, where Azerbaijani forces have occupied 220 square kilometers of Armenia's sovereign territory, committing military crimes, atrocities, and torture.'
Castaldo drew parallels with events in Ukraine, emphasizing that Armenia is a democratic country that has been attacked by an authoritarian, aggressive state. However, he also noted that while the EU supports Kyiv, it simultaneously regards Azerbaijan as a trustworthy partner. He condemned this perspective, highlighting that double standards undermine trust.
'We must free ourselves from the gas dependence trap that we receive from all authoritarian regimes. Clear violations of international law must be condemned. I am always on the side of democracy, I am with Armenia,' Castaldo concluded.
