New footage has emerged from the clashes between protesters and law enforcement in the capital of the Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic. Authorities have ordered security forces to brutally suppress the protests. Gunfire can be heard in the videos, and law enforcement is using firearms.
It is advised that those with weak nerves refrain from watching.
For context, the Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic, with a population of about two million, is located in northwestern Uzbekistan and is the largest region of the country, accounting for nearly 40 percent of its territory. A treaty was signed in the 1990s that allowed it to enter Uzbekistan with the status of a sovereign republic, granting it the right to potentially secede through a referendum.
