Italy's President Re-Elected
Italy's President Sergio Mattarella has been re-elected for a new term, following the voting results from the eighth round that took place on Saturday evening in the Italian parliament. The counting of votes is still ongoing, but Mattarella has already secured the necessary 505 votes for victory.
Previously, the 80-year-old former constitutional court judge had repeatedly indicated that he was not interested in a second seven-year mandate. However, he accepted a delegation from the leaders of parliamentary factions, declaring his willingness to lead the country again given the circumstances. The necessity for such a message arose after the seven rounds of voting, which began on Monday, ended without results.
