What Will Happen to the Syunik Section of the North-South Highway? Vardan Voskanian
According to Nikol Pashinyan, the upcoming railway from Julfa (Iran) to Djuga (Nakhichevan) and to Yeraskh (Armenia) is intended to serve the transport hub promoting the connection of the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea from the Iranian side. This was stated by Vardan Voskanian, an Iranian studies expert and member of the Armenia political party, in response to the statements made by Nikol Pashinyan during his Facebook press conference.
He particularly noted: “A question arises: what will happen to the Syunik section of the North-South highway, which aims not only to qualitatively connect Armenia’s northern and central regions with the south, but also to ensure a significant part of the Persian Gulf - Black Sea project without entering Azerbaijani territory.
With such a 'railway logic,' this important international transport hub inadvertently benefits Nakhichevan, whereas Armenia's Syunik province could, in fact, be pushed out of this vital project.”
