Opposition Reports Injuries to Women Protesters; Police Respond
Opposition members conducting actions near the government are reporting injuries to women protesters. The police assure that they are investigating any incidents.
“The police are massively detaining citizens engaged in peaceful civil disobedience at Republic Square. Due to disproportionate actions by the police, one woman has fainted, and another woman has received a severe blow to the head,” wrote opposition representative and human rights advocate Melikyan on his Facebook page.
In a conversation with Armenpress, Edgar Janoyan, Deputy Head of the Police Public Relations Department, stated that the police are conducting investigations into any incidents. “The police investigate any incident and initiate a service inquiry if necessary,” Janoyan said.
During the protest organized by the “Homeland Salvation Movement” initiative on December 24, the police detained 69 individuals. The “Homeland Salvation Movement” initiative, composed of 16 parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition parties, is conducting protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The unified candidate for prime minister from the initiative is former Prime Minister and former Defense Minister Vazgen Manukyan. On December 22, the movement announced a nationwide strike and sit-in, subsequently starting a sit-in at Republic Square.
