Mike Pompeo Expresses Hope That Armenians Will Be Able to Defend Themselves Against Azerbaijani Actions
The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed hope that Armenians will be able to defend themselves against Azerbaijani actions. According to Armenpress, Pompeo made this statement during an interview, deeming the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh dangerous, especially considering Turkey's intervention with its resources.
"This is dangerous. We now have Turkey intervening and providing resources to Azerbaijan, increasing the risks and the firepower present in this historical conflict. Nagorno-Karabakh, a small place with about 150,000 residents," Pompeo noted.
The Secretary added that this conflict has a long history and its resolution needs to take place through negotiations and peaceful discussions. "This is a long-standing conflict. The resolution of this conflict should occur through negotiations and peaceful discussions, rather than military confrontations, and certainly not with the intervention of third countries that are ready to pour oil on the fire. We hope that Armenians will be able to defend themselves against Azerbaijani actions and that they will achieve a real ceasefire, after which they can sit at the negotiating table and try to understand this historical and complex issue," he stated.
