Martuni Mayor Hayk Sargsyan Submits Resignation at My Request, Says Arayik Harutyunyan
The newly elected president of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, has posted on his Facebook page informing that at his request, Martuni Mayor Hayk Sargsyan has submitted his resignation.
“Today, at my request, Martuni Mayor Hayk Sargsyan has submitted his resignation due to a known incident. Hayk is one of my best friends, whom I have unreservedly entrusted with the position of head of the regional office of the ‘Free Homeland’ party. He is one of the legendary freedom fighters of our country, has gone through the path of an exemplary soldier, and has rendered invaluable services to his people and homeland. I am convinced that regardless of the circumstances, he will continue to be a dedicated soldier of our country,” wrote Arayik Harutyunyan.
Earlier, the Martuni mayor had made a post announcing his decision: “You all remember the incident involving me, where I tried to prevent a possible clash between representatives of the Revolutionary Party and a group of Martuni youths during the pre-election period by not allowing them to enter the city of Martuni. I had the opportunity to explain to both the representatives of that political force and our fellow citizens the reason for my action, which stemmed from concern. I still insist on this today, although I realize it was not the best method I could have applied. Yes, that is my shortcoming, and I accept it with dignity. However, I must sadly note that some forces have turned this incident into a topic for political manipulation, and they are consistently trying to overshadow the national elections held in Artsakh. My journey and the love and responsibility I hold for my country and people do not grant me the moral right to quietly observe this process. I, who have placed my life on the altar of my homeland’s freedom, today do not intend to put in doubt the authority of my political beliefs for the sake of a chair. After consulting with the party president and my fellow party members, I am submitting my resignation,” he stated.
