Russian Authorities Seize Airplane Transporting 40 Tons of Smuggled Cigarettes from Yerevan
The 'Boiler Room' telegram channel, citing sources within Russian law enforcement, reports that on April 25, federal security officers seized a shipment of smuggled cigarettes at Krasnodar airport, according to newizv.ru.
According to the telegram channel, 40 tons or 2,700 boxes of Armenian excise cigarettes were confiscated, with the flight originating from Yerevan. The total value of the cargo is approximately 300 million rubles.
Reports suggest that the aircraft was traveling from Yerevan to Afghanistan, making stops in Krasnodar and Dushanbe.
“The transportation of illegal goods in this manner is well-known and happens quite frequently,” stated Artem Dev, head of the Amarkets analytical department. “The principle is very simple: the cargo is documented as transiting through the country, which attracts little attention. However, later on, the product mysteriously disappears within Russian territory. The documents are ‘closed’ outside of Russia, resulting in the appearance that the cargo has been delivered. Yet, in reality, the illegal cigarettes have long since spread across Russian retail markets. This is another instance of a 'stopped transit,' which is often used for smuggling goods from EAEU countries.”
According to the telegram channel's report, the airplane and its entire cargo will remain in Krasnodar during the investigation.
