Investigation by the NSS: Police Chief and Deputy Arrested
According to "Journalist" newspaper, the head of the Davitashen police department, Mikayel Varosyan, his deputy Araik Ghazaryan, an operative of the department, and one other individual have been arrested.
Recall that on April 9, employees of the National Security Service (NSS) and internal security officers of the Police entered the Davitashen department of the Yerevan police, where they conducted investigative actions for several hours. The case was so serious that during the investigation, the NSS did not allow even the head of the department, Mikayel Varosyan, and his deputy, Araik Ghazaryan, to leave the premises.
Later, accompanied by NSS and internal security department officers, the head of the Davitashen police department, police major Mikayel Varosyan, his deputy, the operative, and the investigator were taken to the National Security Service.
But what prompted this special operation? Details of the NSS's actions have become known to "Journalist" newspaper. Specifically, employees of the Davitashen department had recently detained an individual on suspicion of theft. According to circulating rumors in the law enforcement system, the alleged thief told the police that he committed the theft himself, even leading them to the scene of the crime and recounting the details of what he took from where. This means he provided a confession.
This is where the necessity to arrest the police chief of Davitashen originated. The issue is that the alleged theft reported by the Davitashen police was a fabricated case, and the thief gave false testimony, which the police accepted under questionable circumstances.
The NSS was able to uncover the truth through wiretaps and, armed with evidence, entered the Davitashen police department on April 9.
However, this is not where the story ends. According to information obtained by "Journalist" newspaper, during the search carried out in the Davitashen police department on the mentioned date, the NSS discovered hashish inside one of the cabinets. It remains to be clarified what the origin of this drug is and under what circumstances it ended up in the police building instead of being destroyed or kept in a special storage place.
We also learned that the alleged thief, for whom a police chief has been arrested today, has a previous conviction. Whether this person was recruited by the NSS beforehand or if the NSS stumbled upon him later is unclear, but it is a fact that something exceptional has occurred in our country: one law enforcement agency has arrested non-ordinary employees of another agency.
Furthermore, according to our sources, the NSS has initiated a criminal case concerning this matter under Article 308 of the Criminal Code of Armenia for abuse of official powers. To verify the accuracy of the information described above, "Journalist" newspaper contacted the NSS press office, which only stated that a criminal case had been initiated and could not disclose further information.
