The Law Provides for the Possibility of Extending the 30-Day Period by Another 30 Days

The state of emergency typically implies that returning to normal life in the country requires a prolonged period. It is with this reasoning that the law provides for the possibility of extending the 30-day period by another 30 days. This was mentioned by the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Arpine Hovhannisyan, on her Facebook page.

The complete post is as follows: “A purely legal consideration. According to the literal interpretation of Article 5 of the Law on the State of Emergency, the state of emergency can be extended for 30 days throughout the Republic of Armenia. In a different interpretation, one might assume that the law allows for a situation where there are still (or continue to be) conditions underlying the declared state of emergency (immediate threats to constitutional order), yet there is no possibility of extending the state of emergency if it was initially declared, for example, for just 30 days.”

The state of emergency generally suggests that returning to normalcy requires a considerable duration, which is precisely why the law enables the extension of a 30-day period by another 30 days.
