10 Newborns Hospitalized with Coronavirus in Italy
Ten newborns infected with the coronavirus are being treated at the San Matteo Clinical Hospital's pediatric department in Pavia, Lombardy, Northern Italy. This information was reported by the RIA Novosti agency, citing the Italian publication La Provincia Pavese.
Doctors assess the condition of the newborns as satisfactory. According to Professor Gianluigi Marselia, the head of the pediatric department, there have been no cases of intrauterine infection.
“All infections occurred shortly after birth as a result of contact with close relatives, primarily the infected mother,” the doctor explained.
In Italy, coronavirus testing for newborns is conducted in exceptional cases, particularly when the mother is infected.
