Possible Earthquake of Up to 7.9 Magnitude Could Hit Turkey, Japanese Seismologist Warns

Japanese seismologist and senior engineer Yoshinori Moriwaki made predictions regarding a potential earthquake in the Marmara region. This information was reported by Ermenihaber.am.

In Turkey's Kahramanmaraş province (historically known as Marash), a devastating earthquake occurred on February 6, drawing attention to Istanbul.

Moriwaki indicated that an earthquake with a magnitude ranging from 7.6 to 7.9 is possible. It could occur as soon as one year from now, potentially even in one month or as soon as one week from now.

He also added that risk-prone areas include Atatürk Airport, Zeytinburnu, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Büyükçekmece, Fatih, Tuzla, Pendik, and coastal regions.

According to the website, Moriwaki stated, “We saw this during the 1999 earthquake, there were many tremors. If the ground is soft, then it poses a risk, as seen in Hatay. These buildings are interconnected and were all constructed before 2000, they will sustain significant damage.”
