Kim Kardashian Showcases 'Armenian Pizza,' Sparking Turkish Backlash
American-Armenian reality star Kim Kardashian shared a video on her Instagram story that did not sit well with many of her Turkish followers. With 163 million followers on Instagram, Kardashian has been self-isolating at home during quarantine, and she ordered the popular Eastern dish, lahmajoun.
In the video, Kardashian asked if her followers knew what lahmajoun is and referred to it as 'Armenian pizza.' According to Ermenihaber, the video about lahmajoun, which is also widely recognized in Turkey, sparked outrage among Turkish social media users. Various comments were left under Kardashian's photos.
Famous Turkish singers Demet Akalın and Ebru Polat also reacted to Kardashian's post. Akalın commented in English under Kardashian's photo: 'Lahmajoun is Turkish,' while Polat wrote in Turkish: 'Lahmajoun is not Armenian pizza, dear.'
It is noteworthy that lahmajoun is often referred to as both Armenian and Arabic pizza and is also quite popular in Turkey. The Kardashian sisters are known for frequently provoking the ire of Turkish users online, especially following their support for the passage of a resolution by the U.S. Senate recognizing the Armenian Genocide, which led to them being targeted by Turkish netizens.
