Why Vladimir Gasparyan Was Summoned by the Special Investigation Service: Details
According to the "Zhoghovurd" newspaper, yesterday former Chief of Police of Armenia Vladimir Gasparyan was invited to the Special Investigation Service (SIS). Sources close to the newspaper indicate that his summons to the SIS was not related to the criminal cases being investigated against him. The occasion arose from a complaint filed by an employee of the Armenian police, based on which a criminal case was initiated, and during that period, Vladimir Gasparyan was serving as the Chief of Police.
He was summoned to answer specific questions and remained at the SIS for only 10 minutes.
It is noteworthy that in 2019, Gasparyan was charged with abuse of official powers, which was carried out for selfish, personal interest or group motives, as well as for particularly large-scale embezzlement and waste. According to the facts uncovered in the criminal case, from June 1997 to November 2011, while holding the post of Chief of the Military Police and then Deputy Minister of Defense, Gasparyan was aware that three servicemen of the military police force had been employed in 2001, 2004, and 2009 but had not shown up for duty since their appointment. Instead, one of them worked near former President Serzh Sargsyan’s brother, Lyova Sargsyan, as a driver, while the other two served the brother of Serzh Sargsyan, Alexander Sargsyan, as bodyguards.
According to the indictment, knowing about this, Gasparyan not only failed to take legal action regarding the case but also extended the military service term of one of them for five years on December 3, 2010. Additionally, this case has been transferred from the Investigative Committee to the SIS, and now the SIS is investigating the criminal case against the former Chief of Police.
