Video: The US Warns of a Dangerous Situation for Macron in France
New York Times columnist Roger Cohen stated that French President Emmanuel Macron must quickly resolve the crisis in the country to avoid declaring a state of emergency and losing control.
“The French leader needs to restore order swiftly to avoid declaring a state of emergency, which would be seen as an admission that the government has lost control of the situation,” Cohen wrote, noting that, in his opinion, the divisions in the country could be too deep, and the discontent against the president could be too strong to be 'healed.'
Earlier, French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne called on all ministers to return to Paris and remain in the capital amid protests occurring in the provinces.
The protests in France began in the evening of June 27, following the death of a 17-year-old teen at the hands of police in the suburbs of Paris. The demonstrations originated in Nantes, and the residents of Lille and Toulouse joined in the following day. Subsequently, the protests turned into riots and clashes with the police. On the night of June 29, demonstrators set cars on fire, vandalized storefronts, and attacked police officers.
