Japan's Typhoon Hagibis Could Be the Strongest in 60 Years

Severe storms and heavy rainfall have struck Japan. Typhoon Hagibis is expected to be the strongest typhoon in the country in the past 60 years. According to NHK, 16 people are reported missing, with earlier reports indicating five fatalities. This information has been confirmed by the BBC.

More than 7 million people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to warnings of flooding and landslides; however, it is reported that only about 50,000 people are currently in shelters. The storm made landfall near 7 PM local time, south-west of Tokyo, and has begun moving northward. Wind speeds have reached up to 225 km/h. Authorities are concerned that this could become the most powerful typhoon since 1958, when Typhoon Kanagawa claimed 1,200 lives.
