Government Has No Comment on Catholicos’ Aspirations and Hopes: Mane Gevorgyan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's press secretary Mane Gevorgyan responded to the question from "Azatutyun" regarding how she would comment on the statement made by the Supreme Patriarch of All Armenians, Karekin II, who considers it important to change the pretrial measure of Robert Kocharyan.

“First, let us recall that the head of the Information System of the Mother See, Father Vahram Melikyan, had previously been the personal guarantor of Samvel Mayrapetyan, who is charged with various offenses related to the March 1 case, including large-scale bribery and aiding money laundering. Since January 2019, Mayrapetyan has left the country under the pretext of medical treatment and has not returned to Armenia despite the demands of investigative bodies and contrary to the guarantee provided by Father Vahram Melikyan,” said the Prime Minister's press secretary.

“The government has no comment on the aspirations and hopes of the Catholicos; at the same time, we expect that the Mother See will reassess the history of Mayrapetyan’s guarantee and the situation that has arisen as a result,” she added.

Today, the "NEWS.am" website published the position of Supreme Patriarch Karekin II, which particularly stated: “Regarding the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, being acquainted with the medical opinions concerning the president’s health, we consider it important that in parallel with the implementation of justice, all preventive measures and actions be taken, including the change of pretrial measures, to ensure his protection from further health complications during this pandemic period.”
